VW (2.0 Automatic) 01M Trans Fluid Info:

FACT: - The 01M is NOT a sealed unit;
FLUID CAN BE CHANGED JUST LIKE ANY OTHER AT TRANS SETUP! IT JUST TAKES A FEW STEPS!

FACT: Came out in 1996, and it DOES NOT HAVE A DIPSTICK!  The 01M is a 4 speed computer controlled FWD gearbox.

VW Myth - they say  -: The trans is sealed for life, and so is the "special" fluid inside of it.  Only dealerships can "power flush and fill the system" I guess that means that once the trans fluid blows up, so does the trans.  Haha!

1st read this - all of it - (Beware, this makes this process seem like a NASA moon shot, its not, its just a little harder than an oil change...)

It takes a very special synthetic fluid that, yes costs $20 a qt, and comes from the dealer or online venders.

VW part #  G 052 162 A2.

DO NOT ADD REGULAR (DEXTRON) ATF INTO THE UNIT!!  NEVER ADD ANY AFTERMARKET "FIXES" OR SEALANTS!!!

You don't need a VAG com to drain or fill the unit.  This should be done at least every 30K miles!!!  I reused my old sealing plug and gasket - no leaks.

Here are my steps for service:

1 - Buy a filter/pan gasket from worldimpex auto;

IMPEX SKU # 207779
AT FILTER KIT
CONTAINS: 1) 096321370 PAN GASKET, 1) 01M325429 FILTER AND 1)01M325443 GASKET.
List Price: $66.85 :: Impex Price: $31.71

Buy 7 quarts of this fluid:

IMPEX SKU # 238993
A/T FLUID
1 LITER BOTTLE, 4 SPD A/T 12 BOTTLES PER CASE

GAP Also sells a good (Cheaper) aftermarket fluid!

2 - Warm up car.

3 - Raise front of car.

4 - Remove 3 bolts that cover trans pan cover

5 - Crack old pan - Remove pan/old fluid (drain it)

6 - Snug pan back down (With the old gasket)

7 - Refill trans with about 2.5-3 qts of fluid - practice the fill procedure as outlined below and in the .pdf

8 - Run car for 5 min, in all gears (keep it on the lift, or in the air)

9 - Drain pan, remove filter, clean pan. (Use brake clean to clean everything off trans and pan.)

10 - Install new filter and pan gasket

11 - Using a VAG.COM OR an IR Thermometer (86 deg F) (point and shoot at the trans pan) follow the fill procedure outlined in the PDF manual. (Should take almost 3.5-4 qts).

12 - IMPORTANT!  Check fluid level by removing "drain" plug WITH THE CAR RUNNING!!!!  If fluid comes out, it was over filled, if no fluid comes out - keep adding it until it does. :) - Simple.

13 - Clean everything off, go for a drive. :)
