In the article “Retaining Under-prepared Students in Remedial Courses at the Community College,” Kristine M. Young of Parkland College states that our country’s changing demographics and economic structure will contribute to the increase of under-prepared students seeking higher education in the future.  Many of these at-risk students will enter the Community College of Philadelphia to prepare for one of the College’s select or terminal programs or to acquire the skills and educational background needed to transfer to a four-year institution for a baccalaureate degree.

This workshop focuses on the particular needs of under-prepared students as they begin their postsecondary classes in developmental English and math and also presents engaging classroom procedures and practices, including group work and some short reading, writing ,and math exercises, designed to help these students persist in their educational goals.
