THIS CLASS WILL ONLY MEET ON CAMPUS FOR THE FINAL EXAM AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER. THE DATE, TIME, AND ROOM NUMBER WILL BE ANNOUNCED.

 

OA110 Course Description: Development of correct “touch keyboarding” techniques on the computer keyboard. Speed development to 25 words a minute. Introduction to business correspondence including basic computer operations and elementary word processing functions, using Microsoft Word 2007, for creating, saving, retrieving, and printing of documents. We will key business letters, personal business letters, envelopes, business reports, academic reports, memos, tables, and a personal resume.

 

Textbook and Software:

 

KIT 1 GREGG College Document Processing, 10th Edition, Home Version For use with the Internet-ready McGraw-Hill Irwin, 2006, New York. The ISBN No. for Kit 1 is 0-07-7260538.

 

Kit 1 includes the textbook, the 2007 Word manual, and the necessary software program. Also included are the software directions and an easel for easy positioning of your textbook. You also need Microsoft Word 2007 software for your home computer to complete your assignments for upload to me via WebStudy. This is the edition of Word we are using and which you will be tested on during the final exam. It is the latest version of Word and is drastically different than Word 2003 and earlier versions of Word. The ISBN No. for Kit 1 is 0-07-7260538.

Flash or Jump drive on which to store your completed project documents for upload.

 

Software Settings for College Document Processing for Windows:

Please read Chapter 1 in the Home manual to get an overall view of this program. Continue your readings into Chapter 2 through Figure 2.7 and the rest of Chapter 2 on an as-need basis.

2.2              Specifying Your Settings: Go to manual titled “Home.”

1.                  Select Settings. . . .on the Options drop-down menu.

2.                  Under Full Editing, take off the checks in Timings and in Drills by clicking in the box where the check appears.

General Objectives:

 

1.      To familiarize the student with the keyboard using the touch method.

2.      To begin development of mastery of the keyboard. 

3.      To develop attitudes and work habits which will insure successful experiences in keyboarding in both personal applications and office situations.

4.      To learn how to use Microsoft Word 2007 to type letters, envelopes, reports, memos, e-mail, tables, and résumés.

 

Specific Objectives:

1.      To key by touch--not looking at fingers as you type.

2.      To key by touch the alphabetic keyboard, numbers, symbols and the tab key.

3.      To key at a minimum speed of 25gross words a minute (GWAM) with a high degree of accuracy.

4.      To learn how to use the new graphic interface of Word 2007.

5.      To learn to use WORD to horizontally center, to bold, to italicize, to underline, and to correct.

6.      To learn to use WORD to prepare business reports and academic reports with and without Proofreaders’ Marks.

7.      To learn proper formatting techniques and employee them for business reports and academic reports.

8.      To learn proper formatting of business letters, personal business letters, and envelopes.

9.      To learn to use WORD to key business letters, personal business letters, and envelopes (No. 10).

10.  To learn proper formatting techniques and employee them for business letters, personal business letters and envelopes.

11.  To learn proper formatting techniques and employee them for memos, tables and résumés.

12.  To learn to use WORD to key memos, tables, and résumés.

            *All assignments must be completed or you will not pass this course. This includes the survey at the end of the course. You are allowed to make mistakes. It is better to make a mistake than it is to look at your keys. If you are making many mistakes, repeat the exercises. There is no penalty for repeating the exercises. The more you practice correctly, the faster you will learn where the keys are without looking. (This is your first goal.)

Project Grading

      Each project will be graded on 100 points—Projects must be completed and on time. One day late and the project will drop to a “C”—two days late and the project will drop to a “D” if it has been completed correctly. A zero will be received if your assignment is more than two days late.

3.      Daily practice on keyboard lesson exercises and after the keyboard is covered on continuing lesson exercises is essential if you are to acquire a high skill level .

It is necessary for all timed writings assigned to be taken. However, an excellent way of adding up to 5 points to your final grade is to pass three 3-minute timings within the allowed errors and speeds designated on the above chart*. However, your final grade cannot be increased by more than one letter grade with the addition of these extra timed writing points.

 

*GWAM is gross words a minute.  Nothing is taken off for errors.

Editing must be turned off for all timed writings.

Weekly timed writings will occur after Week 6.

 

PROJECT WORK:

Project work will be labeled with a footer as follows:

Ten points will be deducted for the absence of a footer label or one different than the example shown above.

UPLOADING YOUR ASSIGNMENTS

 

It is extremely important for you to upload your assignments correctly. Make sure that the correct documents are uploaded under the correct assignment. If done incorrectly, they will be returned to you, and you will have to upload them again correctly but receive a lower grade because of lateness.

 

Final Examination

Part II  Production—Business Letter, Personal Business Letter, Rough-draft Copy of letters and reports, memo and table—

80% of the Final Examination grade

 

TO STUDENTS RECEIVING TITLE IV FINANCIAL AID FUNDS

 

Effective Fall 2000, students who receive Title IV financial aid funds and who withdraw from ALL their classes before completion of 60% of the term, i.e., the 10th week (or its equivalent for summer terms) may be required to return all or a portion of their financial aid award.  If it is determined that funds must be returned to the financial aid programs, students must make satisfactory payment arrangements within 45 days of notification or they become ineligible for further financial aid funding.
