Course Description: Introductory analysis of the managerial process from the middle manager's and first-line supervisor's point of view. Analysis of reactions and interactions of individuals and groups within a goal seeking organization. Includes leadership, motivation, personality theory and goal oriented behavior. Primary emphasis given to face-to-face interpersonal relations and a continuing review of contemporary developments in the supervisory field.

 

Course Goals:  Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:                           

                               

·        Explain the difference among supervisors, middle managers, and hot management.

·        Explain how globalization affects supervisors.

·        Describe how plans should link from the top to the bottom of an organization.

·        Explain the concept of a learning organization and how it influences organizational designs and supervisors.

·        Describe the goals of compensation administration and factors that affect wage structures.

·        Describe the control process, including preventative, concurrent, and corrective control.

·        Compare and contrast group decision-making and individual decision-making.

·        Identify and define five personality characteristics relevant to understanding the behavior of employees at work.

·        Define leadership and describe the difference between a leader and a supervisor.

·        Define communication and the communication process, including formal and informal communication.

·        Describe the role of teams in continuous improvement programs.

·        Describe the three purposes of the performance appraisal. Differentiate between formal and informal performance appraisals.

·        List the enforcement priorities of the occupational safety and health administration (OSHA).

·        Define conflict, identify the three general sources of conflict, and list the five basic techniques for resolving conflict.

 

Required Text:  Textbook: Supervision Today, by Robbins and DeCenzo, Most current edition, Publisher: Pearson-Prentice Hall. **You can buy this book online or at our bookstore.**  If you purchase the book online, please make sure you have it available for the first week’s assignment, as late work is never accepted.

 

Grading:  Grading in this course will be based on the following:

 

        There will be 14 textbook assignments. Each assignment has a value of 10 points for the course. There are fourteen required forums which have a total value of 40 points.  In addition, there will be a midterm and final exam each worth 60 points.

 

Assignments (14) @ 10 points each...........140

Forums (14)  40 points Total........40

Exams (2) @ 60 points each.........................120

Total points.......................................................300

 

A = 270 - 300 points

B = 240 - 269 points

C = 210 - 239 points

D = 180 - 209 points

F = 0 - 179 points

 

Late assignments will not be accepted.  Assignments are due on the date stated by the instructor. There will be no make-up tests, assignments, or forums. Two or more missed textbook assignments can result in withdrawal from this course. Textbook assignments are due every week. It is your responsibility to be aware when assignments are due – I will not be sending emails reminding you when assignments are due!

 

Tests may be multiple choice, essay, or a combination of both. Assignments consist of answering the questions at the end of each chapter. Forums require you to respond to questions posted by the professor, as well as interacting with other students.

 

Online Participation:  Community College of Philadelphia’s attendance policy will be modified to work with an online course. In an online course, missing assignments for a session is equivalent to missing a weeks worth of class. Two weeks of missed assignments and you can be dropped – please refer to the college catalog or ask me if you have any questions regarding this policy. **Please read the Financial Aid Office’s policy regarding withdrawing from a class and the ramifications that can result.**
