Course Description:  This course provides students with an understanding of the systems analyst's job requirements and skills, and familiarizes students with the methods of creating and maintaining a management information system. Students are also exposed to management functions and project management techniques and will trace the five phases of a systems study. Data-gathering methods are studied, as well as interviewing and documentation techniques, cost analysis, hardware and software acquisition and the finalization of systems implementation.

 

 

Course Goals:  Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:                           

                               

·        Recognize and understand information systems and their role in organizations.

·        Understand database design and implementation.

·        Create and use a decision support system.

·        Study and explore the changes in business due to Telecommunications, the Internet, and Electronic Commerce.

·        Understand and use an Enterprise Resource Planning system.

·        Recognize how businesses can use information systems as a strategic advantage.

·        Perform a logical and efficient search of the Internet using various search engines.

·        Perform routine maintenance on the computer hardware and software.

·        Design the appropriate forms to create input and output formats.

·        Design the appropriate forms to create and maintain files of data.

·        Create and design efficient and effective web pages.

 

 

Required Texts:  Management Information Systems - Managing The Digital Firm, Laudon & Laudon, Most current edition, Prentice-Hall.

 

Grading:  Grading in this course will be based on the following:

 

        There will be 14 textbook assignments and 14 lab assignments for total of 28 assignments. Each assignment has a value of 5 points for the course. There are four required forums that have a value of 10 points each. In addition, there will be a midterm and final exam each worth 60 points.

 

Assignments (28) @ 5 points each...........140

Forums (4) @ 10 points each.......................40

Exams (2) @ 60 points each.......................120

Total points.....................................................300

 

A = 270 - 300 points

B = 240 - 269 points

C = 210 - 239 points

D = 180 - 209 points

F = 0 - 179 points

 

 Late assignments will not be accepted.  Assignments are due on the date stated by the instructor. There will be no make-up tests, assignments, or labs. Two or more missed textbook assignments or lab assignments can result in withdrawal from this course. Textbook and lab assignments are due every week. It is your responsibility to be aware when assignments are due – I will not be sending emails reminding you when assignments are due!

 

Online Participation:  Community College of Philadelphia’s attendance policy will be modified to work with an online course. In an online course, missing assignments for a session is equivalent to missing a weeks worth of class. Two weeks of missed assignments and you can be dropped – please refer to the college catalog or ask me if you have any questions regarding this policy. **Please read the Financial Aid Office’s policy regarding withdrawing from a class and the ramifications that can result.**
