Course Description:  Basic mathematical processes required for business calculations. Fundamentals of arithmetical operations, business problem solving, linear algebra, and logarithms. Interest and discount calculations, allocation and depreciation, mark-up and mark-down, annuities, and present value.

 

Course Goals:  Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:                            

                               

  • Balance a checkbook and reconcile a bank statement.
  • Apply the base rate portion formula in solving business problems.
  • Calculate trade and cash discounts on a bill or invoice.
  • Re-price merchandise by markup and markdown formulas.
  • Calculate gross and net payroll figures.
  • Use the simple and compound interest formulas in banking decisions.
  • Read and interpret a simplified balance sheet and income statement.
  • Create four types of depreciation schedules.
  • Calculate two methods for valuing inventory control.
  • Compute local sales and property taxes for an individual.
  • Use a mortgage payment, annuity and sinking-fund table.
  • Calculate the yield in percents on stocks and bonds.
  • Calculate reimbursement amount on a fire insurance claim.
  • Convert metric and U. S. measurements.
  • Determine three types of "averages" (or determine mean, median and mode).

 

Required Text:  Business Mathematics – A Collegiate Approach, by: Roueche, Graves & Tuttle. Most current edition. Published by Prentice Hall. **You can buy this book at our bookstore, or online. If you buy it online, make sure that you will receive it on time to complete the first assignment. Late assignments will not be accepted.**

 

Grading:  Grading in this course will be based on the following:

 

        There will be 14 textbook assignments. Each assignment has a value of 10 points for the course. There are four required forums that have a value of 10 points each. In addition, there will be a midterm and final exam each worth 60 points.

 

Assignments (14) @ 10 points each.........140

Forums (4) @ 10 points each.......................40

Exams (2) @ 60 points each.......................120

Total points.....................................................300

 

A = 270 - 300 points

B = 240 - 269 points

C = 210 - 239 points

D = 180 - 209 points

F = 0 - 179 points

 

   

Late assignments will not be accepted for any reason.  Assignments are due on the date stated by the instructor. There will be no make-up tests or assignments. Two or more missed textbook assignments can result in withdrawal from this course. Textbook assignments are due every week. It is your responsibility to be aware when assignments are due – I will not be sending emails reminding you when assignments are due!

 

Tests may be multiple choice, essay, or a combination of both. Assignments consist of answering the problems assigned from the Chapter Review Exercises at the end of each chapter.

 

Online Participation:  Community College of Philadelphia’s attendance policy will be modified to work with an online course. In an online course, missing assignments for a session is equivalent to missing a weeks worth of class. Two weeks of missed assignments and you can be dropped – please refer to the college catalog or ask me if you have any questions regarding this policy. **Please read the Financial Aid Office’s policy regarding withdrawing from a class and the ramifications that can result.**
