Hello English 102 Students:

You are enrolled in English Composition II or the research paper (section 901; sequence number 9043).  This course is a seven week, summer session course (Summer Session I, May 16-June 30, 2005).

Please review the English Department Protocols for English 102 (available through the CCP English Department Web-site, http://faculty.ccp.edu/dept/english/102%20FINAL%20RECOMMEND.rtf).  This course will adhere to those protocols.  That means that all students must be willing to do the following:

  • Read Of Mice and Men;
  • Write a 4-6 page, typed, double-spaced paper on Of Mice and Men that includes APA in-text citations and an APA Works Cited;
  • Read Franklin Delano Roosevelt;
  • Read How to Write Term Papers and Reports;
  • Do independent research on FDR and George W. Bush (which will entail reading at least 200 pages independently);
  • Write a 10-12 page, typed, double-spaced, research paper comparing one or two policies of FDR and George W. Bush that includes APA in-text citations and an APA Works Cited page;
  • Hand in a paper process for the research paper (topic paragraph, summary of the book on FDR, 10 source annotated bibliography, outline, 50 notes, first draft, etc.).

If you are unwilling or unable to do this much work over the first summer course, drop the course.

The course texts are John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men ($11.00), Roy Jenkins’ Franklin Delano Roosevelt ($20.00), and L. Sue Baugh’s How to Write Term Papers and Reports ($10.95).  Any edition of Of Mice and Men will work.  All texts have been ordered at the CCP Bookstore—located in the basement of the West Building.

This is a fast paced course with a heavy work load.  Some of the work load is common for all students (Of Mice and Men, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and How to Write Term Papers and Reports)—but a lot of it is independent (gathering and analyzing the research for your research paper and writing the research paper).  It is a hard course in the regular 14 week semester.  It will be even harder in this condensed format.  Be warned.

That said, I look forward to working with those students ready for such a challenging course.  Welcome to the course.  If you have further questions, please contact me at kmurphey@ccp.edu or (215)  751-8340.

Sincerely,
