What is Geospatial Technology?

Geography is the science of place and space. Geographers ask where things are located on the surface of the Earth, why they are located where they are, how places differ from one another, and how people interact with the environment. Geographers also study the linkages between human activity and natural systems. Geographers were, in fact, among the first scientists to sound the alarm that human-induced changes to the environment were beginning to threaten the balance of life itself. They are active in the study of global warming, desertification, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, groundwater pollution, and flooding (adapted from Association of American Geographers website).

Geographic Information System (GIS) is a collection of computer hardware, software, and geographic data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. GIS is fundamentally used to answer questions and make decisions.

With a GIS, you can link information to location data, such as people to addresses, buildings to parcels, or streets within a network. You can then layer that information to give you a better understanding of how it all works together. You choose what layers to combine based on what questions you need to answer.

GIS can be applied in almost every industry/service! Here are a few examples:

  • Businesses utilize GIS to determine new store locations for unmet demand;
  • Environmental organizations rely upon GIS to protect drinking water supplies and animal habitat from chemical contamination;
  • Civil Service employs GIS to dispatch emergency services with the fastest route while assigning police officers to areas of higher crime activity.
