Statistics for Science Math 251
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course approaches the study of statistics with the goal of preparing and encouraging students to critically read and review statistical reports and apply statistical methods in their professional situations. Designing survey questionnaires and building Excel databases are presented. Descriptive and inferential statistical applications and hypothesis testing techniques are introduced. Emphasis is placed on the appropriate use and analysis of statistical methods rather than calculation of statistics.
INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES:
This course is taught online. Primary instructional resources for the course include the following textbook, Excel software, and links to websites. The required text is:
Heiman, Gary W. Basic Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences, 4/e or 5/e.: New York. Houghton Mifflin Company.
It can be purchased new at the following site.
I have also made provisions for the text to be available at the CCP bookstore. Used copies are also available at used text book sites (like Amazon) on the Internet.
Since there is an abundance of statistical software available for crunching numbers, the emphasis for this course will be on statistical analysis rather than computation. Since we will be using Excel throughout the semester to summarize data, you will need access to both Excel and Word.
