Given the "cutting shifter" posts and all that, I felt I had to take some type of leap.

Take 1 stock shifter lever. And two chunks of metal, same thickness, about 1.5" long each

(No, I don't measure... Did this all by eye... rulers are no fun..)

Chop that chunk about somewhere in the middle.

Weld the two plates to it about 1/2" or 5/8" longer or so... again, no ruler..

Install that chunk o ugly weld into your 020 trans... and..

Yup, its a real short shifter folks. My shift throw went from 5.6" at the top of the shifter, down to 4"...

Does not, and cannot "hit shift linkage" or "harm syncros..".. I have a cut away trans if you don't think so...

Well, I DID use a ruler for that.. well a dial caliper.

Measured in the car... at the top of the front of the shifter...

looks good, i would have done the same if i had a decent welder and the confidence in my welds so i wasnt left stranded somewhere. do you think it should be as square as possible though? i can see problems with the gears not engaging properly because of this maybe not i dont know for sure

Naa.. dude, there is sooooo much room to play with this design... If the lever is straight, its gonna work. I just held it with vice grips when I welded it... 120V gasless mig deal.. All this adjusts is the "front to back" throw, not side to side...

Sorry for being the layman, but what is different about it aside from being cut and welded..

What, in the design, reduces the throw.

I believe it is a leverage thing.

A____^__B

2 ^ 1

A________ ^ __B

4 ^ 1
B is the shifter, A is the lever on the tranny.
It takes the first one twice the length to push the other side the same distance. I think

seems like a good idea cuz other short shift decrease the leverage and make it harder to shift while urs actually makes it easier to shift. Youd think some company would have though of that before.

Shift linkage removal.

first step remove retaining pin for shift weight, move shift weight out of the way of linkage.

second step remove ball joint. I used a thick flat tip screwdriver. i put the blade under the ball joint and twisted. then i pulled up and the piece came right off. make sure you unclip it first before prying.

finally use a 13 mm wrench to loosen the nut holding the lever on. then sumply pull the lever off. mine came off easiest in the upright position. 13mm nut can be seen in picture above.

here are the two linkages in side by side position.

From first glance it is a thick piece of metal, and seems like it will be tough to bend. therefore i will be using a torch to heat it up. it appears that the autotech is simply a cut and modified stock piece.

you will need to make the s bend in the piece right angles. bend the first bend further until it is a 90.

in that picture i went slightly past 90, but it shouldnt make much of a difference.

next bend another 90 until the part where the shift weight went into is parallel with the b all joint.

it should look like this when its done.

make sure the shift weight hole part of the lever is straight, not wavy. now drill your hole where you want it and put back in your bushing andd youre ready to go. i do not have the drill bit big enough to drill the hole so i wont be able to test it today. but as it is now it is stll probally close to a 30-35%% reduction.

there ollie happy?

EDIT: Now with Pictures for your pleasure!

the method i shoed is one i did a while ago modeled after the autotech short shift. the piece i modified was originally a stock piece. modifying this piece reduces the up and down throw. doing the piece dan did reduces up and down as well i believe, but my method doesnt require welding for those who cant do it.

yep, mk1-2-3 shift linkage is very very similar. mk3s have the shift weight, among other minor changes. but these mods should work for all 3 makes.

wow.

anyway, the longer that rod is, the less degrees of rotation at the pivot point are needed to make the dame displacement at the end of the rod. this in turn requires less movement of the shift rod to get the same displacement on this modified rod. the drawback is that the resistance in shifting in the transmission is increased with the lengthening of the rod. the longer rod allows the same force to apply a stronger moment on the pivot point, which is transferred to the shifter. but dont worry, its not much and is easily adapted to.
