Greetings to Distance Education Students

Hello, my name is Dr. Douglas B. Hoehn, and I am a Professor in the Department of English.  I am been instructing courses over Web Study for several years now, and have found it to be a very rewarding experience.

Distance Education brings the classroom to you, no matter where your location. It never closes, and is but a mouse click away from you whenever you want to drop by and work on an assignment, post up some comments in the forum, or check on your latest grade.

What is the best advice I can give you to make your experience with this new kind of learning rewarding and successful?  Enjoy what you are doing! It’s that simple – yes, there is work to do, things to learn, and assignments to submit – but all that can be much more satisfying when you look at it as a fun way to learn and explore.

As you can see from my photo, I am an avid snowboarder and teach snowboarding to many aspiring riders every year – young and old. And I have always found that those who look upon the learning experience as “work” never do as well. But, those who look at is as “fun” and seek to enjoy all that they are learning, do much, much better and get so much more out of the experience.

Just as a beginning snowboarder, you will sometimes fall and have to get back up. You will not do as well on an assignment as you wished, but learning doesn’t always mean immediate success. Rather it is through our mistakes and failings that we become better and stronger.

So enjoy this experience; work hard, get your work in, and give it everything you have. And, hopefully, in the end you will have found this to be a great way to learn and become a more fulfilled and thoughtful human being. I look forward to sharing this learning experience with you as we enter the wonderful world of Distance Education.
