Course Description:  Introduction to microcomputer applications will focus on financial accounting problems and their solutions adapted to microcomputers.  In this course students will utilize a spreadsheet program (Microsoft ExcelÒ) and a commercial general ledger software package (Peachtree Complete Accounting 2004, Release 11.0Ò).

 

Course Prerequisite:  ACCT 101

 

Technology Requirements:  To fulfill the requirements of this course, you MUST have the following software and hardware resources available to use.  Software, you must have Microsoft ExcelÒ available to you on your computer.  Peachtree Complete Accounting is packaged with the text, and you will have to install it on the computer you intend to use for this course.  Hardware, to use Peachtree Complete, the system requirements include an IBM PC compatible with a Pentium processor 233 MHz or higher, Windows XP/2000/ME/98 or Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6, 64 MB minimum (128 MB recommended).  A CD-ROM drive is required.  80-140 MB free hard disk space, 256-color SVGA display or better, 800 X 600 resolution with 64K colors (or higher using Small Fonts in your Windows Control Panel Display settings).

Attendance:  College Policy #5 allows your instructor to withdraw any student from the class who has missed at least two (2) weeks of class.

 

Academic Honesty:  Except when permitted by your instructor, all work is expected to reflect an individual effort.  Attribution should be given when appropriate.   Cheating will be grounds for a failing grade.

 

Disabilities:  Students with verifiable disabilities will be accommodated, but they must register with the Center on Disability, room M1-22, during the first two weeks of class.

 

WebStudy:  All materials for the course can be found online in WebStudy.  To access WebStudy, go to http://ccp.whyy.org.  Once you arrive at the WebStudy Login Screen, click on the username box.  You will need to enter your username and password in the appropriate boxes.  These are both the same and consist of the first letter of your first name, your last name, and the last 4 digits of your social security number.  As an example: Alan Davis, ssan 123456789, would make the user name and password: adavis6789.  After you’ve entered your user name and password, click on “Login” to enter WebStudy.

 

Sessions:  This course is made up of a number of sessions.  Within each session there are reading materials - Materials, assignments – Work2Do, Forums – discussions, and in some sessions, Exams.  You begin each session by the reviewing the materials for the session.  Then you should progress to the text; followed by the assignment(s); then to any forums that might apply; and finally, when applicable, to the examination.  You should complete one session before starting the next, since the work may be cumulative.  For this course, there are more sessions than there are weeks in a normal semester.  This means that some weeks, you may have 2 or 3, or more, sessions to complete.

 

Homework:  Homework assignments are an integral part of any course you take.  To master the requisite skills for success in the course, you should complete all homework assignments prior to their being reviewed in class.  Throughout this course, homework assignments need to be completed and submitted for part of your grade.  Homework submissions will be accomplish by either answering specific questions about problems you are assigned, or by submitting files for me to review.  The WebStudy page for the course contains the required homework assignments.  You must complete your homework and submit it by the announced due date.  Late assignments will be penalized 10 points for each day they are submitted late, except the last assignment which must be submitted by the assigned due date.

 

Examinations:  This course requires that you complete comprehensive problems that will replace examinations.  These problems related to the accounting software and the spreadsheet.  As with your homework assignments, you will be required to either answer specific questions about the problems after you’ve completed them, or submit your files for me to review and grade.  The WebStudy page for the course contains more detailed information about the comprehensive problems.  Exams must be completed and submitted by the published due date.  Each day the exam is late will result in a deduction of 15 points.

 

Grading:  The College grading scale will apply.  Your final grade will be determined by the grades you earn on homework assignments, examinations, and for participation in class “forums.”  Each of these components of your final grade will be weighted as follows:

 

Peachtree Homework Average     20%

Peachtree Practice Set Average   40%

Excel Assignment Average           30%

Forum Participation                      10%
