Womens Studies / Gender Studies

What is Women’s Studies/Gender Studies?

The interdisciplinary field of Women’s Studies/Gender Studies examines the

historical, social and cultural roots of gender identity and gender inequality. This field

examines the ways in which gender roles have changed over time and across cultures

and promotes an understanding of differences created by gender, race, ethnicity,

class, global location and sexual orientation.

Women’s Studies/Gender Studies Associate’s Degree Program

The Women’s Studies/Gender Studies curriculum is one of the concentration

options available in the Liberal Arts (A.A) degree program. This option is appropriate

for students who wish to transfer to a four-year college or university to earn a

Bachelor’s degree in Women’s Studies/ Gender Studies. This program is also

appropriate for those who wish to earn a bachelor’s degree in a wide range of majors

in the humanities and social sciences, such as history, literature, sociology, political science, psychology, communications, education and human services.

What Can You Do with a Women’s Studies Degree?

The interdisciplinary nature of Women’s Studies/Gender Studies produces innovative

and flexible thinkers who understand and respect the increasingly diverse and

multicultural world in which they live. As a Women’s Studies/Gender Studies student,

you will develop important skills of analysis and research, writing and communication,

and leadership and organization that can be applied in a broad range of occupations.

Women’s Studies/Gender Studies Certificate Program

The Women’s Studies/Gender Studies certificate program is a 30-credit program designed to

provide understanding and expertise in issues of gender and of women’s experiences. This

program is designed to enhance students’ performance in a variety of career fields, such as

education, business, communication, social work, counseling, justice, law and health services. In addition, this curriculum offers a unique experiential learning component. This certificate

may be earned by itself as an additional academic or career credential or can count

toward your A.A. degree in Liberal Arts.

Who Benefits from Enrolling in the Women’s Studies/Gender Studies Certificate Program?

• Students seeking degrees in a variety of career fields, such as education, business, communications, social work, counseling, justice and law and health services. A student in the Behavioral Health curriculum planning to work with agencies serving women and girls would benefit from this certificate.

• Students who already have a degree or those who need continuing education credit, such as teachers.

• Students in the Liberal Arts who do not plan to major in Women’s Studies but would like the additional credential to enhance their career prospects.

Why Community College of Philadelphia?

• The College is easily accessible by public transportation.

• Tuition is the lowest of any local college or university.

• The College offers day, evening and weekend classes.

• To make its programs accessible to residents throughout the city, the College

has three regional centers and more than 30 neighborhood sites, in addition to its

Main Campus near Center City.

Because we recognize that some students may find it difficult to attend classes for

several hours each day or evening, the College offers a variety of courses through

distance education and in an accelerated format. Many of the general education

requirements and several of the core courses in the Women’s Studies/Gender Studies

Articulation Agreements

Articulation agreements with four-year area colleges and universities facilitate seamless
