Editing - an ongoing process

1. structure, check to see if you have

   • introduction

   • thesis statement

   • support paragraphs - each starting with a topic sentence

   • appropriate and sufficient examples

   • Use what pertains to the question

   • transitional words

   • conclusion

2. sentences

   • variety of types

   • parallel structure

   • correct form

3. vocabulary

   • effective word

   • correct word

Proofreading - the final step

1. sentences - no fragments, run-ons, comma splices

2. verbss

   • subject and verb agree

   • tense is consistent

   • irregular verbs used correctly

3. spelling

   • Look ofr homophones

   • check use of capitals

   • if dictionary allowed, use it

4. punctuation

   • commas

   • apostrophe marks

   • quotation marks

5. Typographical errors/handwriting irregularities
