Overview of Program

The Culture, Science and Technology (CST) Program is an Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree program designed to provide students with the educational foundation necessary to deal with the complex interrelationships among technical, scientific and societal changes in the modern world. CST provides a solid foundation for students who wish to:

·         Transfer to baccalaureate programs or professional schools.

·         Prepare academically for entrance into a select program in Health Careers, Computer Science, Engineering or the Associate in Science.

·         Select a specialized associate degree.

·         Explore areas of science, technology, social sciences and the humanities.

Curriculum Core Courses and Electives

Health Careers Concentration

For students interested in Nursing or an Allied Health Career

Please note, a course with a number below 100 may not be used to fulfill a requirement of the CST curriculum.

Humanities Electives

ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 are required in the curriculum.  Two additional courses in the humanities are required for graduation. The two Humanities Electives can be chosen from any of the following courses:

Art 101, 103, 104, 205

English 100 and 200 levels, other than 101, 102 and 112

Foreign Languages

History

Humanities

Interdisciplinary Studies

Music 103, 105, 106, 120, 121

Philosophy

Religious Studies

Mathematics

MATH 118 (or higher) and a second math course at Math 135 level or higher are required. For students interested in a health career, either ECON 112 or MATH 251 is recommended for one math course.

Science and Health

Therefore, in addition to CIS 103 and the health course, the student will finish three courses in one scientific discipline (depth) and one course in a different scientific discipline (breadth).

For example, if the student selects a Biology course and a Chemistry course for the breadth requirement, he/she should take either two more biology courses or two more chemistry courses to fulfill the depth requirement. An example of possible courses to meet this requirement is given below.

Take BIOL 106 as one science course.

Take CHEM 110 as second science course to fulfill the requirement for breadth.

Take BIOL 109 and BIOL 110 to meet the curriculum’s depth requirement.

Social Science Electives

Students must take 3 courses (nine credits) from the following list of courses:

Anthropology                          Earth Science                          Economics

Education                                Geography                              History

Interdisciplinary Studies         Justice 171                              Political Science

Psychology                              Religious Studies 101, 151, 170, 175

Sociology                                Social Science                         Women’s Studies

Students and their academic advisors or counselors should review the society courses selected to be sure that they fit into required transfer plans.

General Education Requirements

Humanities Electives and Social Science Electives should be chosen to meet the General Education Requirements for Writing Intensive, Interpretive Studies and American/Global Diversity.-see College Catalog for acceptable courses.

General Electives

Students need at least three courses or nine credits of general electives to complete the 60 credits required for graduation.  Students and their academic advisors or counselors should review the elective courses selected to be sure that they fit into required transfer plans. Students can also use elective courses to earn a Proficiency Certificate (see page 13).

Total Credits

Students must have at least 60 credits to graduate.

*AH 101, Introduction to the Health Care Professions, may be taken when students reach the level of English 098/099. Since AH 101 introduces students to various aspects of the health care field, students will benefit most from taking this course early in their academic careers. This course may be taken during the first semester of college level courses or earlier.

Student must have at least 60 credits to graduate.

If a student finds the credit load for each semester to heavy, she/he should take 6 to 9 credits during Summer Semesters.

Therefore, in addition to CIS 103, the student will complete one technology course, two laboratory science courses, each in a different scientific discipline, and two more courses either in the technology chosen or one of the scientific disciplines.

There are many options to choose to best meet the student’s needs.  This decision should be made in consultation with an academic advisor or counselor.

Two examples of possible courses to meet the depth requirement are listed below.

1          Take BIOL 106 as one science course and then take BIOL 109 and BIOL 110 to meet the depth requirement.

2          Take CIS 105 as the technology concentration course and then take CIS 150 and CIS 252 to meet the depth requirement.
