Clinical Laboratory Technology

Clinical Laboratory Technicians play a major role in health care and preventative medicine because they assist in diagnosing diseases by analyzing laboratory specimens for their physical and chemical properties.  Clinical Laboratory Technicians type and crossmatch blood that is used in transfusions during surgery and medical emergencies. In research facilities, Clinical Laboratory Technicians work closely with other scientists to identify and isolate disease-producing organisms. This is a health career for students who want to help patients and physicians yet also want low patient contact.

As medicine continues to become more advanced and laboratory equipment becomes more complex, there is a growing need for highly skilled and well-trained professionals. Community College of Philadelphia’s Clinical Laboratory Technician graduates work in hospital laboratories, large reference labs such as LabCorp and Quest, pharmaceutical companies, research labs, city health labs and the medical examiner’s office. Opportunities are available for continued education. Employment opportunities are excellent due to a national shortage, with many employees offering hiring bonuses.  In fact, salaries of graduates working in the Philadelphia area often exceed the national salary average, with graduates reporting earnings of $45,000 to $60,000 yearly.
