Goal I -- Students will use word processing software to produce academic and professional documents both independently and in collaboration with other writers.
Goal II – Students will use electronic spreadsheets to organize, analyze, and present data.
Goal III – Students will demonstrate an understanding of database concepts, and be able to retrieve information from library information systems and personal computer databases.
Goal IV – Students will use The Internet for collaboration, social networking and social applications.
Goal V – Students will describe how to connect peripheral devices such as printers and cameras to personal computers and how to connect a computer to wireless network in a secure manner.
Goal VI – Students will use presentation software, such as PowerPoint, to create presentations that integrate documents and other objects from Word, Excel and the Internet.

The course starts with a review of the learning objectives and expected outcomes for this course. The instructor will also review the various tools and techniques that will be required as part of the course. Some of the techniques to be reviewed include how to submit a file via My Courses; how to use SNAP, the online training and assessment tool; and how to access the course blog.
After the introduction and orientation has been completed, there will be a rapid review of the word processing skills that are prerequisites for this course. This review will be followed by instruction in the word processing skills that are necessary for the college student possess.
The word processing unit will be followed by the spreadsheet unit. Once again the instructor will rapidly review the skills that are prerequisites for this course followed the instruction on the skills in spreadsheet software that are necessary for a college student to possess.
The third unit of this course will involve an introduction to database concepts and instruction on how to use and electronic or web based library system. This instruction on the library system will be provided by staff from the College library. The instructor will discuss database concepts as they relate to storing and presenting data. This unit will be presented at different times in the semester in the various CIS 103 sections so that the Library staff isn’t required to visit every CIS 103 section at the same time.
The next unit is devoted to social networking, Internet collaboration, data communications and mobile computing. This unit will introduce the student to the use of blog and wikis. Popular social networking sites such as LinkedIn and MeetUp.com will be discussed as well as social collaboration web sites like Delicious, Facebook and Google Docs. This unit will also provide instruction in data communication concepts in order to help the student understand wireless communication and how messages are transmitted across the Internet. The final part of this unit is instruction on common mobile computing devices and how they connect to a personal computer.
The last unit of this course is a collaborative integration project. The student will work with other members of a team to create a presentation that incorporates objects from other Office application.
