The Field Placement Experience |
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH/HUMAN SERVICES (BHHS) HOME PAGE FIELD PLACEMENT INFORMATION On this page, you will find answers to most questions pertaining to the practicum courses in the BHHS curriculum. To be eligible to register for practicum courses, a student must have earned a C grade or higher in BHHS 111 (Helping Skills). Course Title: BHHS 195 or BHHS 292 Course Description: Students will spend 12 hours a week (for a total of 156 hours per semester) in a field placement related to their area of interest, for the purpose of learning to work directly with clients. In addition, students will meet in groups of no larger than seven persons for two hours every other week for the purpose of planning, discussing and making presentations about their field experiences. Practicum courses MUST be taken with either BHHS 194 or BHHS 291. Field Placement Coordinator: Luke Amann, M.S. Office:
W2-6G Telephone: (215) 751-8522
E-mail: lamann@ccp.edu The job of the field placement coordinator is to assist the student in finding and maintaining a field placement site. This is accomplished by the student submitting a Practicum Preference Form to the coordinator, as soon as possible. The coordinator will contact the student to determine time availability, interest in specific client populations etc. The coordinator will provide the student with information that can be used to contact the potential agency, set-up a brief interview and determine a schedule. While some agencies have more informal interviews, other field placement sites may require a student to submit a resume or additional information. It is important for the student to bring a copy of the Field Placement Packet to their potential supervisor during the interview. Many agencies require a physical exam, Criminal Record checks and/or Child Abuse History clearances. Criminal and Child Abuse forms can be obtained from your potential agency, on-line or the field placement coordinator. Please note that these forms often take 4-6 weeks to complete and be returned to the agency.. In some situations, if a student has an appropriate job at a human services agency that meets the criteria of the course, they may be permitted to use their job as their field placement site. This needs to be approved by the coordinator. Sometimes, students may have a contact at a specific agency that they wish to use as their placement site. The field placement coordinator will follow-up on these contacts as appropriate. To organize a field placement often takes a lot of time. The earlier we can get started in setting up a placement, the better it is for the student. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have. |
