Technology and Education
  • Nearly 20% of all U.S. higher education students were taking at least one online course in the fall of 2006
  • Almost 3.5 million students were taking at least one online course during fall 2006
  • 2006 — a nearly 10% increase over the number reported the previous year
  • 9.7% online growth rate far exceeds the 1.5%  overall growth of higher education student population

Where has the Growth in Online Learning Occurred?
  • Two-year associate’s institutions have the highest growth rates and account for over one-half of all online enrollments for the last five years.
  • Baccalaureate institutions began the period with the fewest online enrollments and have had the lowest rates of growth.

  • Podcast: a portmanteau of the words "iPod" and "broadcast“ (also know as vodcast for video)
  • series of audio or video digital-media files which is distributed over the Internet

  • Podcast creation promotes collaborative knowledge building among student producers    –Lee, McLoughlin, Chan 2008
  • Sharing student conceptualization of content stimulates individual and collective learning and supports social processes – Lee, McLoughlin, Chan 2008
  • Literature supports the use of a digital audio learning object (DALO) –Middleton & McCarter, 2005)

Features of a DALO
  • Simple to produce: Well-defined, limited scope; easily produced with limited technical knowledge
  • Immediate: produced and available quickly
  • Educationally focused: addresses a well-defined objective
  • Reusable: may be interpreted according to needs of different contexts (if not a lecture)
  • Engaging: this is a challenge for audio-only product
