Community College of Philadelphia is moving to

 Microsoft’s latest version of

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access

MICROSOFT OFFICE 2007

As the College moves to the newest version of Microsoft Office, some confusion is inevitable because Microsoft has not only changed what the user sees on the computer screen (the “ribbon”) but also the “file format” or how the various documents are saved.  The new files will have a four (4) letter extension ending with an “x” (e.g., docx, xlsx, pptx). This may lead to some problems when documents are created using one version of the software and then opened for reading and editing with a different version.

To minimize these issues Microsoft has created a “File Format Converter” that may be freely installed on any computer. We are making this piece of software available here for you to download and install on any PC on which you work.

Just click on the link above and you should see a dialog box asking whether to Run or Save the program. Click on RUN and the software will begin to install itself on your computer. There will be a series of dialog boxes—just click on the appropriate answer to keep installing until it is finished.

Once the converter is installed you can open any documents created in version 2007 with the older versions of the Office program. However, you MUST open the Office application (Word, Excel, etc) FIRST and then open the file you wish to work with through the application. For example, click on File --> Open and then select your file.
