FTP- (File Transfer Protocol)

In order to transfer your web documents to the faculty server, you must first load the FTP software.  If you do not have the software on your machine, you can get it form the following link. If your machine already has the software loaded, you can see it by selecting START – Programs – Ws_ftp – WS_FTP95LE.

This will start the FTP software.

The next step is to set up the software to attach to the college web server. The setup below is used to configure your machine to attach to the server.

You can open the WS_FTP95LE software by double clicking on the icon from the program menu.  When the software opens you will see the following screen:

If there is already information typed into the Session Properties box, click the New box to start entering your information.

Below is a sample of the information you need to add

Please take note of a few important issues.  The Profile Name is whatever name you want to call your FTP profile.  The Host Name is the full name of the web server. Your User ID must start with a “.” Notice mine “.dfriel.faculty.ccp” Your password is your Novell password for the College

We are ready to connect.

Click OK from the General Page.  The software will try to connect you to your server.

Once you are connected you will see your complete web server folder, mine looks like this , if you click on the folder your files will show on the right side of the screen (Remote Site).  Your machine (Local System usually C: drive) is on the left.

My web page was on my C:/ drive.  We can change to any of the available drives by selecting [-a-] [-c-] etc. in the left screen and double clicking to change to that drive.

You might notice that in this example there is a file in the C: drive. The files I am looking for were in file called Student_index that was in a folder called Dfriel.  We can move these files to the web server by highlighting the files on the left (“your machine”) and clicking the Arrow in the center that points to the right (“Faculty Server”).  Your files will be transferred to the server.

Please note:  The commands on the right side of the screen are for your web server space.  The same commands appear on the left side.  This side is for your local machine.

Drag and Drop Method

Another way to connect that you may find easier is with Internet Explorer.  This will work in the most recent versions of Internet Explorer version 6 is the best one to have on your machine.  Microsoft has added an FTP client to its browser.  In order to use this method, you have to be comfortable have more than one window open on your desktop and you must be able to drag files and folders between open windows.  If none of this is a problem for you, then here is an easy FTP method.

In your Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, type the following command in the Address bar:   ftp://faculty.ccp.edu/

This will connect to the web server and ask you to login with the following Pop Up Window.  Fill out your faculty username and password in the space provides and Click on the Login button.  Notice the username starts with a dot.  Yours has to be the same way.

After you log in, you will see your website folder.  You have to double click to open your folder

The next thing you need to do is open your window that contains your Web pages and drag the files and folders over to the server. Below is my student page containing the files I wanted to transfer.   Just by dragging the files from Student Page folder to the Web page folder, you can update you webpage.  Pretty Cool

Notice this is on my C: drive
