Welcome to the field of Psychology
Welcome to Psychology at the Community College of Philadelphia. The field of Psychology attempts to use scientific methods to study and understand human and animal behavior and its underlying mental processes. At CCP we have designed a series of foundation classes that cover the wide range of the diverse subfields of our discipline. Each course is designed to teach students the basic concepts of that area, how those topics are researched and what kinds of applications the theoretical concepts have to our lives. In each course we have tried to include topics, discussions and references to human diversity. This multiple contextual approach affirms the relevancy of Psychology.
The psychology faculty believes that all students should start with the Introduction to Psychology class (Psychology 101), which surveys the entire field and which introduces students to the major theoretical perspectives and issues in Psychology. Once you complete that course you can take any of the specialized classes we offer. For example, students interested in how people grow and change over their lifespan can take any of three courses, Child Psychology, Adolescent Psychology or Lifespan Development, depending on their particular interest. Students interested in getting experience doing psychological research should consider taking Psychology 110, Introduction to Applied Psychology. In addition to those classes, we have courses that focus on a wide range of topics such as social interactions (Psychology 221), human sexuality (Psychology 202), personality theory (Psychology 211) and mental illness (Psychology 205).
Whatever Psychology courses you decide on, I am confident that you enjoy and benefit from them!
